The Brief
Te Uru Pounamu - The new police station in Taneatua seeks to renew the relationship between the NZ Police and the local community. This building will replace the old police base on the same site, with the intention of welcoming local residents into a new shared space under a philosophy of Community, Connection and Protection.

Our Response
The project involved extensive consultation and reflection with the local community, Ngai Tuhoe Iwi, NZ Police, and other key stakeholders, to understand the uniqueness of this community and how a new building looks to provide a broader platform to support safety and prosperity, with the aspiration to provide a platform for a safer and more vibrant Taneatua community for all that live and visit here.
The building includes community engagement and meeting spaces, office space for NZ police and secure back of house functions. Sustainable design features include locally sourced timber and rammed earth structure, Declare materials, and on-site energy generation. The building is designed within the principles of the Living Building Challenge, the most sustainable building standard in the world.
